Children, Young People and Families Manager- Occupational Profile

As a Children, Young People and Families Manager, you will ensure direction, alignment and commitment within your practice, team(s) and organisation and across partnerships to help children, young people and families aspire to do their best and achieve sustainable change. They will build teams, manage resources and lead new approaches to working practices that deliver improved outcomes and put the child, young person or family at the centre of practice.


This qualification is suitable for a range of learners, either working as a manager of a childcare environment or wishing to become a manager of a childcare environment.

The learner must achieve the following on-programme assessment requirements prior to Gateway:

  • Completion of the mandatory qualification specified in the option chosen
  • Level 2 English and Maths
  • Completion of a portfolio to support the competence interview

Gateway Requirements

The decision to take an apprentice through Gateway is made between the employer, Independent Training Provider and apprentice. The apprentice must have achieved all the required on-programme elements before they enter Gateway, including holding a current DBS Certificate.

End-Point Assessment (EPA) Requirements

The EPA for Children, Young People and Families Manager contains 2 methods of assessment:

  • Situational Judgement Test (50%) – paper-based written test sat under controlled conditions and will last for 45mins
  • Competence Interview by Portfolio (50%) – Structured discussion approx. 55-65 mins between apprentice and Independent End-Point Assessor (IEPA)


Both Situational Judgement Test and Competence Interview will be graded Pass or Distinction by the IEPA.

Upon achievement of this qualification learners can progress into various job roles such as:

  • Childcare centre manager
  • Childminder
  • Special Educational Needs Assistant

Future Learning Opportunities

Learners can progress to studying Degrees in Children and Young People Community studies, social work or youth work, as well as CPD professional qualification updates.
